Hey guys,
for all you people who are in college, or have graduated, have any of you worked while you were in college? How well did that work for you? how did you manage to balance school life, social life and work all at once? would you recommend doing this. I'm considering it, because I might live in an apartment on my own instead of a dorm, and just my SSI stuff may not do the job. so comments welcome please.
Take care,
Les
Les, I worked a couple of jobs while in school. I tutored music classes, and worked for the office of students with disabilities. The cool thing about those two jobs is that I could set my own hours in a way. When I went to grad school, I picked up more employment working a few hours a week in a group home for retarded adults. Later, I was working full-time and got married while in grad school. Everything was fine until the marriage. I'm still married with no regrets, except that if I had it to do over again, I'd have waited to get married. It was really hard juggling work school and trying to be a decent husband/human being all at once. The short answer to your question from my point of view is that yes it can be done, but be careful not to over-extend/commit yourself.
Good luck,
Lou
Hi, I also worked for one semester in my school's office for students with disabilities. Honestly, while it was hard, I enjoyed it for the most part. Since it was an on-campus job, I think the staff were a bit more accomodating. It was really hard to balance work/school/friends. If you're considdering working, you may want to think about going to school part-time if at all possible. I made the mistake of working while taking the hardest upper level Sociology course of my entire collegiate career. It really sucked to have to balance homework and work. But, I'd do it again. The sense of accomplishment I had while working was great, plus it was nice to work in an office where I felt like I was making a difference.
Hi guys,
I had a job interview at an insurance company for a potential summer job yesterday. my vocational rehab councilor, and someone from the Maine devision for the blind who's been working with me since I was little went with me, and they were discussing my options, and I brought up working tthrough college to them, and they brought up the option of having two classes, and doing some work. I think that's a pretty good idea. I'm gonna keep my options open though. Thanks for the feedback.
Leslie
Good luck, Leslie. If I hadn't worked in college, I probably wouldn't have the job I have today or working in the field that I'm in, so I'm really glad I worked while in school.
Best,
Lou
Working while in college is an awesome idea. It shows that you can nicely multitask.
I worked a couple of part time jobs in college and would definitely do it again.
Just because we're blind, it doesn't mean we should do any less than many other college students do. Besides, it looks great to employers and may lead to future full-time work.
I agree with all who posted here. Yes, its really hard to balance school and having a job, but at least, after your done with the whole thing, you get a sense of accomplishment, you get to have more experience, and some income to pay for your stuff independently. Working and juggling other things in your life will also help you become more disciplined, motivated, and you learn to appreciate the money you get from the job. Yes, it really helps your resume look good though I know most of the jobs you get while in college are not related to your major, at least, you get to learn a new skill other than your major afterward. It will serve you well in the long run. Its really tiring to have one job so if I were you, try to take a balanced schedule with those classes that you need, but make sure not to put all the hard classes together. Some people take longer to graduate because they were studying and working at the same time. I think it depends on how much you can take each semester. Just make sure that you don’t take too many classes and then work. That will really stress you out. I hope it helps.
